BA Insight Adds WestKM Metadata to Content From Many Systems at Any Scale

Tags content from 50+ sources with up-to-date litigation and transactional law references to boost legal firm productivity

Boston, MA – August 31, 2015 – Today BA Insight announced the WestKM AutoTagger, software that brings Thomson Reuters WestKM’s legal-industry entity extraction solution and Microsoft SharePoint together. The product allows for unlimited amounts of content to be tagged from over 50 sources. Law firms with WestKM 5.0 or higher can now tag content with citations, litigation information (such as court, judge, attorney, and litigation category), and transactional data (such as defined terms, parties, applicable law). This metadata dramatically improves attorneys’ ability to quickly find, explore, and compare information, which translates to higher productivity and an overall improved litigation and transaction law process.

“Previously, we could only run a small fraction of our documents through WestKM, limiting the amount of metadata we could extract from our documents”, said Mike Tominna, Senior Manager of Web & Search Systems at DLA Piper. “Now we can use WestKM’s categorization and entities on all of them consistently. BA Insight has consistently delivered for us, and they have found a very innovative approach to a tough problem. This is just one example of a search based application we have worked with BA Insight on, in continuation of a great working relationship.”

BA Insight’s software sends content to WestKM for analysis against up-to-date categories and entities, without slowing throughput or requiring WestKM to index the content. Content from any and all of BA Insight’s 50+ connectors can be tagged while crawling and indexing it into SharePoint’s search facility, while maintaining short crawl times and ensuring that search results are fresh. Categories can change, or new judges and attorneys can be added, without forcing the system to re-crawl and re-process every document. Tags from WestKM can be combined with firm-specific tags generated by BA Insight’s AutoClassifier product as well. The resulting metadata improves search and powers applications such as our Matter Comparison application.

“Our legal customers have been clamoring for a high-performance, high-scale way to do this, and we listened” said Jeff Fried, CTO of BA Insight. “We’re committed to helping our customers get the most out of their current infrastructure investments, such as SharePoint and WestKM.  We’ve seen this pattern across many industries, and that perspective helped us find a general solution which performs well at scale.”
