Open Formats, Google, and Electronic Health

- Microsoft to open up file formats to standards body. Slashdotters are suspicious.
- Ontario’s having a hard time getting doctors to switch to electronic records. I think the problem lies with the incentives: there’s just not enough benefit to the individual doctor to justify the effort to scan old records.
- Ross Mayfield thinks processes aren’t going to be important in the future. Nicholas Carr disagrees, but thinks there’s some good ideas in the article. I also disagree–in addition to Carr’s points, I feel that Mayfield is mistaken to think of process merely as mistake-avoidance. Processes also enhance performance by making it possible to avoid constantly rehashing decisions.
- Robert Cringely has some interesting things to say about Google’s strategy, but neglects to look at the question of why Google needs to dominate the Internet (that may come up in a follow-up). Those data centres are only useful if Google has data to deliver…
