Observations from LegalTech

Trade show weeks can be long ones, but they often lead to positive outcomes and end up being worth the effort and time away. I find it helpful to evaluate each event upon returning home, hoping to identify what  were good uses of time, and what I would change if I had to do them again.

I recently attended the LegalTech event in New York and felt it was well worth it.  If you have never been to LegalTech, then it’s hard to describe. At first, thinking about heading to New York in the dead of winter may dissuade some people, especially this native Southerner, but the big storm missed the show by a week. The weather was mild, leading to great walking around weather. The location near Times Square couldn’t be better.  The show is a stone’s throw away from great restaurants, shows, and the Late Show with Steven Colbert (highly recommended, by the way!)  But, we’re not there for the sights, we’re there for the tech, right?

It was great to see a good representation from so many key vendors, with the expected focus on eDiscovery.  Given BA Insight’s strategic partnership with Recommind, which many were interested in discussing with me at the event, I need to provide a plug for their booth. They had a great presence, but a little close to the long drive champion hammering golf balls down the virtual course! Being a vendor ourselves, these shows are a great opportunity to connect with existing customers, and meet new people. On that front, lots of good progress was made. I heard many concerns about firms facing challenges with finding and accessing relevant information that their lawyers and partners need to do their jobs – sifting through millions of documents has become cumbersome.  This is right up our alley! I also received very positive feedback on our new SmartHub Analytics product, so that was great validation for me and the company.

It’s always good to be back in New York, talking technology that drives the legal industry. LegalTech is a great show, and is packed with bells and whistles, give it a shot if you’ve not been before.

Looking forward to seeing all of our legal industry friends at “ILTA’s 2016 SharePoint || Office 365 Symposium” and “ILTACON 2016”, both events that bring a lot of value to its vendors and attendees!
