The Reality of Convergence
April 28, 2006 |
While I’m not the last person in the world to actually discover Skype, I’m certainly not the first (I can be reached now at kevinjbrennan). Skype is, frankly, the last nail in the coffin of the telecom companies.
The problem they’re faced with in the internet era is simply that they don’t provide any particular useful service. Much though they dislike it, and are trying to fight it, telecom is now a commodity not much different from sewers, roads, and power. Data is infrastructure, and it may not be long before countries start moving it into the public sphere.
The question in the short term is whether we treat Internet access like a commodity and allow everyone access to data, or we allow companies to find ways to charge high prices for access to the best content. In the U.S., it’s not clear which way the conflict will go.
In the long term, it’s in the interest of everyone except the bandwidth providers to see Net Neutrality maintained.
